Fielder High Flying With The Hipster
Dale Fielder knows just what to say at the right time. Wasting no time on pablum music for tracing paper artists who are swelling the airwaves today. He composed nine of ten tunes, all of them five-star material. Standouts like "Nights Longing For You" and "The Healing" shows his ideas to be clear and very lyrical. While virtuosic skills are certainly apparent, Fielder never stops swinging. Notice how he breathes new life into a forgotten Harold Mabern tune, "I Remember Britt". Previously recorded by Lee Morgan in 1970 with Mabern on Live at the Lighthouse, Dale elects to swap his tenor for soprano sax, with colorful and bright escapades and romps through Britt's secret enclave. Can't you just hear the ocean? The title track is a sure bet for massive airplay with its drive and funky groove. This piece really burns with passion by its sidemen. The new recording introduces the great talent of the young pianist, Danny Grissett now with Tom Harrell and also features long-time associates Thomas White, drums, Trevor Ware, bass, and Fielder's nephew, Baltimore percussionist Robert White Jr. This is Fielder's most mature date yet and features his strong passionate playing.
